Practical Vehicle Care for Irish Drivers
I've spent 16 years in the Irish automotive industry helping drivers understand their vehicles properly. What started as an apprenticeship in a Cork garage turned into a mission to demystify car maintenance — because too many drivers either skip routine checks or panic unnecessarily at dashboard warning lights. I'm here to bridge that gap with straightforward, actionable guidance that actually works for real Irish roads and real vehicles.
My background spans hands-on garage work, technical operations management, and now educational content creation at Trader CZ Limited. I've seen what happens when drivers don't understand their fluid levels, tyre condition, and NCT requirements — it costs them money and creates unnecessary stress. That's why I focus on teaching the essentials: oil change intervals, fluid checks, tyre pressure and tread monitoring, dashboard warning light interpretation, and NCT preparation checklists. It's not complicated once you know what to look for.
16 Years in Automotive
Apprenticeship & Early Career (2008–2011)
Started at age 17 in a family-run garage in Cork, learning every aspect of vehicle upkeep from routine servicing to complex diagnostics. Completed Level 4 Automotive Engineering at Cork Institute of Technology in 2011, building the foundation for everything I do today.
Technical Operations & Garage Management (2011–2019)
Progressed to managing technical operations across a network of independent garages in southern Ireland. Developed deep expertise in NCT preparation, dashboard diagnostics, and helping drivers understand their vehicle's condition. This is where I really learned how to explain technical concepts in plain language.
Educational Content & Advocacy (2019–Present)
Now leading automotive content development at Trader CZ Limited, focused on creating accessible car care guidance for everyday Irish vehicle owners. I've worked with thousands of drivers through practical workshops and online education, helping them take ownership of their vehicle's health and knowing exactly when to visit a mechanic.
Core Areas of Specialisation
Oil Changes & Fluid Management
Understanding routine oil change intervals for your vehicle type, checking coolant and brake fluid levels, and recognising when fluid condition matters. It's not just about the intervals — it's about knowing what you're looking at when you open the bonnet.
Tyre Pressure & Tread Depth
Monitoring tyre pressure correctly, understanding tread depth measurements, and knowing when seasonal rotation matters. Tyres are your only contact with the road — they're worth getting right, especially on Irish weather.
Dashboard Warning Lights
Decoding what those lights actually mean and knowing whether you need to pull over immediately or can drive safely to a mechanic. Not every warning light is a crisis — but some definitely are.
NCT Preparation & Roadworthiness
Following the NCT preparation checklist to ensure your vehicle meets roadworthiness standards. I'll help you understand what the test actually checks and how to prepare properly so there are no surprises.
Vehicle Washing & Interior Care
Performing regular washing and interior care routines that preserve your vehicle's condition and resale value. Maintenance isn't just mechanical — it's about keeping everything in good shape.
When to Visit a Mechanic
Recognising the difference between something you can handle and something that needs professional attention. This is perhaps the most valuable skill — knowing your limits keeps you safe and saves money.
Education & Professional Background
Level 4 Automotive Engineering
Cork Institute of Technology, 2011
Comprehensive qualification covering vehicle systems, diagnostics, and maintenance standards. This formal training provided the technical foundation for all my hands-on garage work.
Apprenticeship Training
Cork Garage Network, 2008–2011
Three-year hands-on apprenticeship learning every aspect of vehicle maintenance, repair, and diagnostics. Real-world experience that no classroom can fully replicate.
Technical Operations Management
Southern Ireland Independent Garage Network, 2011–2019
Eight years managing technical operations across multiple independent garages, overseeing NCT preparation, complex diagnostics, and staff training. This role taught me how to explain technical concepts clearly to drivers with varying levels of mechanical knowledge.
Why I Do This Work
Here's the reality: most Irish drivers don't understand their vehicles. Not because they're not smart — they just haven't been taught properly. Too many either skip maintenance entirely or panic at the first warning light and spend money they don't need to spend.
I've seen drivers spend hundreds on unnecessary repairs because they didn't know what a particular light meant. I've also seen vehicles fail NCT because owners didn't know what to check beforehand. These aren't complicated things. They just need to be explained clearly, without jargon.
What drives me is knowing that once you understand the basics — oil intervals, tyre pressure, dashboard lights, fluid levels — you feel more confident in your vehicle. You save money. You stay safer. And you know exactly when it's time to call a mechanic versus when you can sort something yourself.
"Once you understand the basics, you feel more confident in your vehicle. You save money. You stay safer."
